ABC Has Reportedly Cast Its First Black Lead on ‘The Bachelorette’
It’s about dang time…
ABC has officially casts its first black lead on The Bachelorette after over 30 combined seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Variety revealed on Monday.
Rachel Lindsay, a 31-year-old Texas attorney, who is currently a popular contestant on Nick Viall’s The Bachelor will reportedly be announced as the next Bachelorette on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!
News of the casting was leaked by blogger Reality Steve despite the fact that six women still remain on the current season of The Bachelor. ABC has yet to confirm or weigh in, but executive producer Mike Fleiss teased on Twitter that a “historic announcement” was in the works:
The franchise has received plenty of criticism over the years for its lack of diverse casting. Leads have always been exclusively white on both series. Though the news of the first black bachelorette should indeed be celebrated, it definitely isn’t something producers like Fleiss should be proud of. After all, they could have cast a person of color this entire time but chose not to.
