Meryl Streep Takes Down Donald Trump In Her Golden Globe Speech
Meryl Streep once again showed why she is a true national treasure. The actress captivated the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards with a powerful yet concise speech during which she called out President-elect Donald Trump, without even mentioning his name.
Streep accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award (a lifetime achievement award) at the ceremony on Sunday night, but the actress didn’t talk about her career at all. Instead, she took the opportunity to critically address the severity of current political climate imposed by Trump.
“There was one performance this year that stunned me,” said Streep. “It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.”
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”
Streep was obviously referring to Trump’s remarks during his presidential campaign when he blatantly made fun of New York Times reporter Serge F. Kovaleski, who has arthrogryposis – a disorder which visibly limits the functioning of one’s joints.
The actress almost broke down in tears, but managed to compose herself and continued with her engaging speech.
Crawling With Outsiders And Foreigners
Streep decided to be blatant herself and subtly yet powerfully attack President-elect Trump for threatening to deport outsiders and foreigners.
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts,” said the legendary actress.
Every once in a while during her speech, the camera would cut away from her and show the reactions from celebrities like Denzel Washington, Bryan Cranston, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., Mel Gibson, Kerry Washington, etc… who were visibly moved by Streep’s words.
Streep ended her speech in tears, mentioning some wise words she was told by her friend, the dear departed princess Leia:
“Take your broken heart. Make it into art.”Celebrity Gossip
